  • Hudson came from England to the New World to find a 'Northwest Passage'.
  • Hudson was hired in 1607 by merchants to find a route for trade over the top of the world; the British merchants wanted to beat their Dutch competitors in finding a fast route. They provided a ship and crew on this trip, the ship was called the Hopewell.
  • Hudson's first journey was to travel around Greenland and find a route north, it was unsuccessful and he returned to England
  • Hudson was sent by the merchants again in 1608, this time to travel north of Russia.
  • Hudson's second trip was also unsuccessful and he returned to England.
  • Hudson was hired again in 1609, this time by the Dutch East India Company. The ship they provided was the HalfMoon.
  • Hudson was directed to sail through the Arctic Ocean north of Russia to the Pacific and the far east.
  • Hudson once again failed to find a passage through the ice but instead of returning to Holland, he decided to try sailing west to North America. This plan was based on rumors that the natives had described such a water route.
  • Hudson's first landfall was Nova Scotia, then Cape Cod and south to Chesapeake Bay and then turned north to Delaware Bay. He continued north to the what was then called the estuary of the North River (now New York Harbor and the Hudson River).

  • Hudson thought that they had finally found the passage that he was sent to find and spent the next several months exploring and documenting the area.
  • Hudson stayed too long exploring and in November, his ship became trapped in the ice. The crew moved on shore to spend the winter.
  • Hudson's ship was freed from the ice in the spring of 1611 and he planned to continue his exploration. His crew wanted to return to England. By June, they had not convinced Hudson to return, so the crew mutinied.
  • Hudson, his son John and six other crewmen were set adrift in a small open boat. The mutineers returned with the Discoveryto England.
  • Hudson, his son and the six others were never seen again.
