A galvanic battery is probably most simply described as a battery which consists of a number of voltaic cells in series or parallel.

An old trade name for the zinc plating process was Galvanum. Hence 'Galvanic'. So the any power cell that used an acid and two dissimilar metals used 'Galvanic action' to create electricity from chemical energy, even though zinc may not have been used at all.
A Galvanic battery is a group of galvanic power cells packaged within one enclosure. A 9-volt battery is a good example, as it is made of 6 power cells at 1.5 volts each, packaged in the neat little rectangular container that we see all over the place.
