The main occupation of the people of the Northern Plains is Agriculture. The main crops are wheat, rice, bajra, jowar, sugarcane etc.
Northern plains of India :
(i) They are formed by the alluvial deposits of the rivers and their tributaries.
(ii) They extend from Sutluj river in the west to Brahmputra in the east.
(iii) They are divided into three parts :
(i) Indus plain (ii) Gaga plain (iii) Brahmputra plain.
Plains of northern India, a flat and enormous plain, extend in the east west direction between the Himalayan in the north and Great Indian Peninsular Plateau in the south. These plains form an unbroken belt of alluvium varying in thickness from east Bihar Plain to Punjab and northern Rajasthan . Sutlej Plain in the west, the Ganga Plain in the middle, the Ganga Delta and the Brahmaputra Valley in the east constitute the northern plains. These are among the largest plains of the world. The desert in the west of the Aravalli Mountain Ranges being largely a plain formed partly by corrosion and partly by deposition is also included in the plains of Northern India. These plains continue to the west beyond Punjab andRajasthan and merge into the Indus Plains in neighbouring country Pakistan. The Northern Plains, also known as the Gangetic Plains, is situated in the southern Himalayan Region. The Northern Plains spreading from Assam to Punjab, has a length of around 2400 km and the width ranges between 150 km to 300 km, varying in different regions. It can be found in Bihar, Punjab, Assam , West Bengal , Uttar Pradesh , parts of Delhi and Haryana .
The main occupation of people in plains can be broadly divided in 2 categories, the white collar job & the blue collar job. People with good educational qualification who are more in office jobs come under white collar job category, while the people who have more technical skills come under blue collar jobs. In big cities the % of white collar job people are more & as we move to rural regions of plains, the % of blue collar or self employed small scale people is more.
The primarily survive on agriculture in the villages and small industries in the city. The women wear sarees and the mean wear kurta pyjama. Because of floods houses are often built on stilts.
India is the land of agriculture and the northern plains are very fertile due to the presence of silt (mixture of sand and clay) which is deposited by rivers like Gangesand Yamuna. Therefore, the occupation of many people is agriculture due the availability of things that is required for farming.
