Canada became a country in 1867 - but not all the provinces and territories joined at once. In 1867, Ontario and Quebec became separate provinces when they joined with Nova Scotia and New Brunswick to form a federal union, the Dominion of Canada, as declared in the British North America Act. Prince Edward Island hosted the meetings that gave birth to the nation but opted not to join at that point in time, and joined later.
