The "pater familias" or "paterfamilias" (singular) or "patres familias" (plural). Meaning "father of the family."
The '''''pater familias''''', also written as '''''paterfamilias''''' (plural ''patres familias'') was the head of a Roman family. The term is Latin for "father of the family" or the "owner of the family estate". The form is irregular and archaic in Latin, preserving the old genitive ending in ''-as'' (see Latin declension). The ''pater familias'' was always a Roman citizen.
Pater is the Latin word for father; English words containing this root include:paternal, paternity, patricide, patrilineal, patrilineage, patrimony, patron, patronage, patronize, patrician, and pater familias.
The head of a Roman family was the oldest male. He was called the paterfamilia.
It means 'father of the family,' and refers to the fact that fathers were usually the heads of Roman families. A paterfamilias had complete and total control over the members of his family.
The patricians were the aristocracy of ancient Rome. The name is derived from the term pater familias (father of the family/head of the household) and from the creation of the senate by Romulus, Rome's founder and first king. Romulus created a council of elders (senate is derived from senex, the Latin for old man) to act as the royal advisory body. He selected 100 pater familias from the leading clans of Rome at the time to seat in the senate. The members of these clans then called themselves patres (plural of pater) a term which implied that they were the fathers of the city.
