The United States of America is actually a Constitutional Republic (or supposed to be) not a Democracy - a raw Democracy is actually defined as Communism.
Under a Democracy you can violate laws, treaties and personal rights as "The will of the majority can take away the rights of the minority" - Thomas Jefferson.
In a Constitutional Republic the "[this] Constitution is the Supreme Law of the Land" and that includes "Treaties made in or by the authority of the United States" - both quotes from Article 6 of the US Constitution.
Treaties are made a part of the supreme law of the land, and when they were violated by the US Government those people and the government violated its core principles; IE: they committed acts of Treason against that thing they were sworn to support and defend.
