It means there is a break in the play, where the audience can go out, grab a smoke, get something to drink, etc. Most 2 act plays go like this Act I runs about an hour/ then a 15 minute break, When the audience is re-seated, they start Act II, which runs to the end of the play. Usually about another Hour or so. One act plays have no breaks, three act plays have two breaks.....you get the idea.
