In the 1951 Disney film Alice in Wonderland, the White Rabbit can be heard singing "I'm late / I'm late / For a very important date. / No time to say "Hello" "Goodbye" / I'm late, I'm late, I'm late."

In Lewis Carroll's book, Alice's Adventures in Wonderland, the first thing the White Rabbit says is, "Oh dear! Oh dear! I shall be too late!"

When we next see him he says, "Oh! The Duchess, the Duchess! Oh! Won't she be savage if I've kept her waiting!"

On his third appearance, he is still clearly concerned about the Duchess when he says, "The Duchess! The Duchess! Oh my dear paws! Oh my fur and whiskers! She'll have me executed as sure as ferrets are ferrets!"

After this his manner of speech takes on a much more conversational tone, as he instructs Alice to fetch his gloves and fan, and subsequently discusses with his servants how best to remove the giant Alice from his house.

The last time he appears in the book is during the trial, at which he acts as herald. During the trial he cries out "Silence in the court," reads the accusation and calls the witnesses

Now she is able to get the key from the table, but again she is too big to fit through the door. This situation makes her cry and she cries until there is a large pool all round her, which reaches half down the hall. The White Rabbit returns, now splendidly dressed and carrying a pair of white kid gloves and a large fan. Alice asks him for help, but the Rabbit is so frightened that he drops the gloves and fan and runs away. Alice picks them up and starts fanning herself while she wonders what it is that has made this day so different from every other. She decides that she must have been changed into another girl in the night as she can't remember her multiplication tables or geography correctly and isn't able to recite a poem properly. The fanning makes Alice shrink again until she is two feet high. She tries again to enter the door but it is still locked and the key is still lying on the table. Then she slips and falls into her own pool of tears. She encounters a Mouse who fell into the pool too, but she frightens him when she starts talking about her cat Dinah and a dog. He promises her to tell her why he hates cats and dogs and they swim to the shore, taking other creatures that fell into the pool too with them.© Lenny's Alice in Wonderland sitesource Lenny's Alice in Wonderland Site - see Related Links

Why does the Gryphon leave in the middle of the Mock Turtle's song in Alice in Wonderland?

The Gryphon rushes off before the Mock Turtle has finished his song to get to the trial of the Knave of Hearts.`Chorus again!' cried the Gryphon, and the Mock Turtle had just begun to repeat it, when a cry of `The trial's beginning!' was heard in the distance.`Come on!' cried the Gryphon, and, taking Alice by the hand, it hurried off, without waiting for the end of the song.`What trial is it?' Alice panted as she ran; but the Gryphon only answered `Come on!' and ran the faster, while more and more faintly came, carried on the breeze that followed them, the melancholy words:--`Soo--oop of the e--e--evening, Beautiful, beautiful Soup!'

Why does the Queen of Hearts want to kill Alice?

In the book, Alice's Adventures in Wonderland, the Queen of Hearts first demands Alice's execution just moments after having met her, as she thinks that she has been rude to her, but she is quickly disuaded by the King.`And who are THESE?' said the Queen, pointing to the three gardeners who were lying round the rosetree; for, you see, as they were lying on their faces, and the pattern on their backs was the same as the rest of the pack, she could not tell whether they were gardeners, or soldiers, or courtiers, or three of her own children.`How should I know?' said Alice, surprised at her own courage. `It's no business of MINE.'The Queen turned crimson with fury, and, after glaring at her for a moment like a wild beast, screamed `Off with her head! Off--'`Nonsense!' said Alice, very loudly and decidedly, and the Queen was silent. The King laid his hand upon her arm, and timidly said `Consider, my dear: she is only a child!'The Queen turned angrily away from him, and said to the Knave `Turn them over!'The next time she orders Alice's decapitation is during the trial of the Knave of Hearts, as Alice is openly defiant towards her.`No, no!' said the Queen. `Sentence first--verdict afterwards.'`Stuff and nonsense!' said Alice loudly. `The idea of having the sentence first!'`Hold your tongue!' said the Queen, turning purple.`I won't!' said Alice.`Off with her head!' the Queen shouted at the top of her voice. Nobody moved.`Who cares for you?' said Alice, (she had grown to her full size by this time.) `You're nothing but a pack of cards!'In Disney's 1951 animated film, the Queen first attempts to order Alice's execution during the croquet game, when she mistakenly thinks that Alice has tripped her up, but the King persuades her that Alice ought to have a trial first. The queen spends the trial attempting to demand Alice's head be cut off, until Alice informs her that she is "a fat, pompous, bad tempered old tyrant," which inspires the Queen to cry, "off with her head!" several times.

Why did Lewis Carroll write Through the Looking Glass?

Charles Dodgson (Lewis Carroll) often told stories to Henry Liddell's three daughters. One of them was named Alice. Dodgson took the three girls on a picnic and told them a fairy-tale of Alice's Adventures Underground. The story was based on a previous picnic they'd had where it had rained. This story was notably one of the best he had told the children. It had actually made Alice cry. She wished for him to write out Alice's adventures down for her.Dodgson wrote the story down and illustrated it and gave Alice Liddell the finished product. A novelist named Henry Kingsley visited the Liddell home and picked up and read the book. He urged Mrs. Liddell to tell Dodgson to publish it. After much revision and the addition of other stories, Alice's Adventures in Wonderland was published.

How does Alice end up in swimming in her own tears?

Alice is stuck in the hall of doors, is quite upset and is over nine feet tall as a result of eating the cake she found under the table. She begins to cry. Owing to her huge size this produces a large volume of tears which creates a pool. The White Rabbit runs by and is so startled by the sight of the giant Alice that he drops his gloves and fan. It is hot in the hall so Alice uses the fan to cool herself, which causes her to shrink to the size of a mouse. She then slips and falls into the pool of tears which, relative to her new size, is about as big as a small lake. And so she ends up swimming in her own tears.
