Gandhi was sometimes beaten, imprisoned, and falsely accused of uprising for his beliefs and teachings. Often by the British authorities in India at the time. He often made enemies of those who had a political agenda contrary to his message and non-violent demonstrations that were based on his vision of a united and independent India. Because of his courage in the face of suffering and injustice, he ended up with a great amount of reverence from both the Hindu and Muslim populations of India, and also gained much of the outside world's attention. He used this reverence and influence at times to make a plea for peaceful relations between the two religions by fasting for so long he would cause himself a great amount of suffering. Because the populations of both religions did not want to see him to suffer in this way, the peaceful protest of not eating would actually work for a time being. Gandhi would then eat when the conflicts ceased and there was a mutual celebration between the two factions. In the end, his pursuit of peace between Muslims and Hindus resulted in his assassination by those that did not want peace or unity.
