Specifically, the consensus tends to be that the character is modeled on Dorothy Louise Gage (June 11, 1898 - November 11, 1898). The little girl was the niece of Maud Gage Baum (March 27, 1861 - March 6, 1953). She therefore was the niece by marriage of author and Oz series originator Lyman Frank Baum (May 15, 1856 - May 6, 1919). The Gage and Baum families were grieved by the tragic end to the beautiful infant's brave struggle to survive.
