Mary Poppins is a fictional character created by the now-deceased P.L. Travers in a series of juvenile novels beginning in l934. The popularity of these things was such that a motion picture was made by the Walt Disney organization in l964-65 starring Julie Andrews in the title role. The movie takes some liberties with the original. Mary has a paramour, a sort of Jack-of-All-trades called Bert. we never learn his last name. Bert has similar superpowers to Mary. Up to a point there are flashes ( in the story) of a sort of Anglicized Jane Addams type with a more middle-class focus and of course, kinetic superpowers. There is some material in the film- that typical of Disney, takes some side-swipes at Religion. The children ( Banks family)- are on a walking tour of London. they are outside Saint Paul"s Cathedral, a major landmark. It starts to rain, instead of taking the kids in the Church and out of the weather- also introducing them to an historical landmark- Mary turns on the superpower charm, conjures up some magical live-horse Merry Go-Round which the kids are engrossed by. This is one of many ( there are several in Mermaid) Disney digs against Religious angles.
