The preamble of the constitution defines India as a sovereign, socialist, secular, democratic republic.

India has a bicameral parliament operating under a Westminster-style parliamentary system. Its form of government was traditionally described as being 'quasi-federal' with a strong centre and weaker states, but it has grown increasingly federal since the late 1990s as a result of political, economic and social changes.

The Preamble is as follows:

" We, the perple of India having solemnly resolved to constitute India into a sovereign, socialist, secular, democratic republic and to secure to all its citizens.

JUSTICE social, economic and political;

LIBERTY of thought, expression, belief, faith and worship;

EQUALITY of status and of opportunity and to promote among them all;

FRATERNITY assuring the dignity of the individual and the unity and integrity of the nation.

In out Constituent Assembly this twenty-sixth day of November, 1949 we do hereby adopt, enact and give to ourselves this Constitution."
