Western Canada is of course the western portion of the country of Canada. Just where western Canada begins, however, is a matter of some controversy. Some would say it is the Manitoba-Ontario border, while others would place it west of Manitoba. The longitudinal middle of Canada is just outside of Winnipeg, Manitoba.
Canada West was a geographical description of the western part of the pre-Confederation Province of Canada. It referred to the former colony of Upper Canada.
