Mitsubishi Montero Bulb Troubleshooting (check in this order):
· Check Fuses
· Check Bulbs
· Check Relay(s)
· Check Light Switch(es)
· Check license plate light bulb and wiring
· Check trailer hitch wiring harness
· Check all wiring harnesses and wire
Most likely its the fuse or a burnt bulb breaking the circuit. Sometimes the license plate and/or the trailer hitch is wired into other circuits and can cause issues in other areas. Sometimes its wires grounding out somewhere on the vehicle. See sources and related links below for bulb information. The fuse block, Find the fuse marked "brake lights" and check to make sure the fuse isn't burned out.

Often this type of behavior is caused by a bad ground for the lighting circuit. Check the ground circuit for the brake lights.
Check the brake light switch first. It is usually near the brake pedal under the dash. A bad turn signal switch can also cause this if the brake lights are also turn signal lights. If the brake lights are independent of the turn signals then disregard the switch problem. A good wiring diagram will help to diagnose the problem also. Check with dealership mechanics as they have access to diagrams.

It is important to have working brake lights on a vehicle. If the brake lights are not working a person should first check the fuse, bulbs and at last the wiring.
