I think you're referring to Ambrose Bierce's Civil War Stories - Occurrence at Owl Creek / Parker Addison Philosopher (1962). Alternative answer: There was a Stephen King story with the same by-line. The soldier was hung on a bridge. The rope broke and he fell into the water and escaped but in the end, reality set in and the noose tightened thus making the man realize he has imagined/dreamed it all. I cant remember if it was in his books written by his pen name of Richard Bachman or not.
