Siddhartha Gautama was a prince in India around 500BC who was surrounded by everything a man could desire. He found life to be unfulfilled and unsatisfactory. He left his cozy life to find the meaning of life and how to end suffering. After 5 years of listening to different Guru's and trying all kinds of spiritual paths he sat down and meditated on the subject of suffering. During that meditation he came to understand how the world truly is (not the illusion we all see) and became enlightened. He spent the next 50 odd years teaching others what he discovered until he died.

Herman Hesse's novel "Siddhartha' is a fictional account of a young man as he travels to join a group of ascetics during the time of Siddhartha Gautama . Ok just wondering if it was referring to the actual Siddhartha Gautema- the founder of Buddhism... wasn't sure.
