Let's begin with geographical similarities and differences, and progress from there. Australia and Japan are both within the Pacific Ocean. Australia is an island continent between the Indian Ocean and the South Pacific Ocean, and is part of the region known as Oceania. Japan, being much smaller, is an island chain, located between the north Pacific Ocean and the Sea of Japan, and is part of Asia. The total area of Australia is 7,686,850 sq km, while the total area included within Japan is 377,835 sq km. The terrain of Australia is mostly low plateau with deserts. In the east, the Great Dividing Range runs from north to south, and there are many fertile plains in the east and southeast, with pockets in the southwest. Japan's terrain is mostly mountainous. The highest point in Australia is Mount Kosciuszko, at 2,229 m whilst Japan's higehst point is Mount Fuji, an elevation of 3,776 m. Australia's climate is generally arid to semiarid, temperate in the south and east, and tropical in the north. As such, the northern areas can be affected frequently by Summer cyclones. Japan's climate varies from tropical in the south to cool temperate in the north. As such, its southern areas may be affected by the Asian version of cyclones - that is, typhoons. Japan is positioned along the infamous "ring of fire" and this is subject to frequent seismic and volcanic activity. Australia does not have this problem, but suffers frequent droughts and bushfires. Australia is rich in Natural Resources, such as bauxite, coal, iron ore, copper, tin, gold, silver, uranium, nickel, tungsten, mineral sands, lead, zinc, diamonds, natural gas and petroleum. Japan's mineral resources are virtually nil, but they have abundant fish resources. Australia is the smallest continent, but the sixth-largest country is area, with a relatively small population. July 2008 figures for Australia showed its population to be 20,600,856, with growth estimated at 0.801%. Despite its much smaller size, the population in Japan, as of July 2008, was 127,288,419, but growth was negative 0.139%. Life expectancy in both countries is similar with Australian men projected to live to 77.86 years and women to 83.75 years. Figures for Japan are - men: 78.73 years and women: 85.59 years. People in both countries enjoy good health, good hospitals and hygienic conditions. Literacy rates in both countries are high, as education systems are satisfcatory for the majority of the population. 99% of Australian and Japanese men and women over the age of 15 can read and write. == == == == Australia's government is a federal parliamentary democracy, whilst Japan's is a constitutional monarchy with a parliamentary government. Australia has 6 states and 2 territories, while Japan has 47 prefectures. Japan's history goes back further than Australia's, as the country received it independence in 660 B.C., after being founded by Emperor Jimmu. Apart from the Aborigines who lived in Australia for thousands of years before white man came, Australia was settled by the British, and achieved its independence on 9 July 1900, effective 1 January 1901.
