There's two answers for this:

  1. A model for the pattern of florets, and subsequently seeds, in the sunflower head was formulated by H. Vogel in 1979. It is a form called Fermat's spiral so that the florets are arranged to give the closest packing possible, and thus as many seeds possible per head.
  2. The sunflower seed is typical in its physical structure. The seed hull might be solid black or black with white stripes (few or many). Within that is the seed with its thin seed coat outermost. The seed holds the embryo which will grow if presented with the right environmental conditions.
