- The Ghana (or Wagadu) Kingdom floursihed between 830 and 1235 AD, succeeded briefly by the Sosso Empire, which was defeated by the Mandinka. Sundiata Keita and his successors (including Mansa Musa) ruled the Mali Empire until around 1600, when the divided domain was conquered by the rival Songhay.
- The Wolof (Jolofs) ruled what is now Senegal along the Atlantic coast.
- The Ashante Kingdom (1701-1957) still controls some dominions within Benin, Ghana, and the Ivory Coast. Farther east, the Yoruba and their Oye Empire (14th to 18th century) controlled an area called Yorubaland within modern Benin and Nigeria.
