1944=1945
I can't say what it was like in the USA but I can give you an idea what it was like in Southern England at that time.
I was sixteen then, I had been in uniform for some time as a Sergeant Major in Company B, Royal Sussex Regiment, Army Cadet Force. I had received training from a British commando unit and one of my duties was to visit other cadet units and give insruction re the assembly and use of machine guns.
Food and clothes rationing was severe. My Father was in the Army somewhere in north Africa.
Air raids were less frequent during these years. In 1940 there were often 3 within 24 hours. being so frequent I seldom went to school and by the time I was twelve I had stopped going to school altogether and never went back.
In our small town on the Sussex coast our streets were filled with Tanks parked end to end waiting to be shipped to Europe
In the early hours of D day I left an Air raid shelter to the roar of aircraft, the sky seemed to be full of airplanes, it has been reported there were more than 8000 over southern England that morning.
It was 1947 before I got to Germany, Military Policeman. Hamburg and Dresden were still mostly rubble.
