In the early 1800s, the East and West were linked by canals. I'm not sure about the links that exist today.

In the mid-1800s, locomotives were better than other available forms of transportation in terms of speed, carrying capacity, reliability, etc. However locomotives had the disadvantage that they were limited in the places they could get to by where tracks had been laid, other forms of transportation available at the time locomotives were introduced could get anywhere that people lived.

Who invented the first ship, railroads, airplane, etc.
steam engines were improved
there were horses and people who's jobs were to have a ruck sack that you could ride in and they would say "ride 400 km for 5 dolla! very cheap prices for good value!" and this would make them very un wealthy but this was the main transport back then also there were trains and horses but they smelt so they got no likes on facebook
At the beginning of the 1900's, the most common forms of land transportation were the railroad and the horse. Well, and on foot, of course. On American rivers, the steamboat was still very much in use, but was fading in popularity. At sea, the great ocean liners and steamships were very common. The airplane was invented in 1903. The automobile had been invented in the late 1800s, but was not yet in widespread usage. By the end of end of the 1900s, it was airplanes for anything longer than a 5-hour drive, and sometimes for those as well. Passenger ships were still popular for recreation and entertainment, but very few people sailed from here to there. Cars are still extremely common, of course.
