South Africa has a long and complicated history of oppression, collonialisation and outsider influence, which partly describes why South Africa is so well developed. South Africa is the richest country in Africa, due mainly to the fact that it has rich Gold, Diamond, Platinum, Uranium and Coal deposits. Mining forms a massive part of South Africa's economy, as does agricultural exports.

South Africa is almost unique from an African perspective, in that it has not recently experienced any civil wars or major governmental turmoil. It is also much less entrenched in international markets as other African countries (many use the US Dollar as their currency) and is therefore protected (to a large extent, but not completely) from international financial troubles such as the recent global economic recession.

In recent years, South Africa has seen some major investments by foreign countries and their own government, owing mostly to the fact that the 2010 FIFA World Cup is being hosted there, but can also be attributed to other factors. The largest investments have been from China, followed by Europe.
