Egypt is the world's driest country to date. Egypt was and is predominantly a desert. Only 35,000 square kilometers, 3.5 % of the total land area is cultivated and permanently settled. Major portion of the country lies within the wide stretch of desert that stretches from Africa's Atlantic Coast across the continent and into southwest Asia.

Egypt also has four places in the world's driest places:

Aswan, Egypt 0.02"

Luxor, Egypt 0.03"

Arica Desert, Chile 0.04"

Ica, Peru 0.1"

Antofagasta, Chile 0.2"

El Minya, Egypt 0.2"

Asyut, Egypt 0.2"

In the central as well as the southern regions of Egypt, it can go for several years without rainfall. Annually Egypt receives 80 millimeters of rainfall or less with the wettest area near Alexandria receiving 200 millimeters.
