Racial discrimination is illegal in South Africa. There is no official recognition of racial groups. However, in practice, the old racial categories from the days of apartheid are still in use for statistical purposes, mainly to check if affirmative action programs are being targeted at the right people and are having an effect on them.
The primary racial categories were Black, Coloured, Indian and White. This covered native Africans, Africans of mixed descent, African people of Asian origin and Africans of European descent. There were exceptions, like Chinese which didn't fit - so Chinese were made honorary White.
