The Ohio River Valley. In 1753 Governor Robert Dinwiddie of Virginia sent a 21 year old planter and surveyor names George Washington into the Ohio country. His mission was to tell the French that they were trespassing on territory claimed by Great Britain and demand that they leave. Washington delivered the message, but it did no good.
In 1754, Dinwiddie made Washington a lieutenant colonel and sent him back to the Ohio country with a militia. Then they were instructed to build a fort where the Allegheny and Monongahela Rivers meet to form the Ohio River (Present day Pittsburgh). When Washington and his troops arrived they found that the French had already taken over that land and were building a fort where they were supposed to build theirs. ]

The British colonists were upset with the French in the Indian War because of the French's involvement in North America. The French had established a strong presence in the region, constructing forts and trading posts along the waterways. This posed a threat to the British, who wanted to expand their own trading and settlement in the area, and to the Native Americans, who were wary of the Europeans' encroachment on their ancestral lands.
