The PS3 has a settings menu that allows the PS3 to be automatically shut off when not in use. If your PS3 settings are set for automatic shutoff after not being used while you wanted to charge your controllers that was what it was supposed to do. Your controller should also be set to shut off when the PS3 turns off or you will always have fully discharged batteries when they have been left on. It is possible to set the PS3 to shut off automatically when not being used for a time that is long enough to fully charge your controller. The automatic shut down may even be turned off, but it is not recommended.

Not really. It is better to set the Playstation for auto turn off. Any electrical component is better off when not needed and leaving the PS3 on serves no useful purpose. The auto turn off could still allow time to charge controllers. Controllers should also be set to turn off with the PS3. That is why these features are found with the PS3

The PS3 does not charge game controllers when the PS3 is turned off even though you leave it plugged in because when the PS3 is off it is completely off. The same is not true for controllers which will continue to remain on when you turn the PS3 off unless you go to the PS3 setting and set it to automatically turn off the controllers. The other accessories should work just like the controllers.

The PS3 dual shock 3 controller is turned on by pressing the Playstation Emblem. They do not need to be plugged in except to charge and the initial connection with the PS3. They would not always be desired to be functional when charging or fully charged and still plugged in. Except when the system is set up to automatically turn off the controllers they are turned off by using the PS emblem to bring an on screen menu that has a selection for turning off the controller as well as other choices. The system (PS3) should be set to automatically turn off the controllers with the PS3 or you will find the controllers always need to be charged
Yes, it should shut off when the batteries are fully charged. If not it is either a very old charger or it is defective. You do not want to overcharge the batteries so use a charger that shuts off automatically.

Its from the iPod processing for over 3 hours. But don't worry leave it off for about a day or two. and it will be back up and running. (that is, if it shuts off automatically) If it does not shut off with the warning, and shuts off unexpectedly with no warning. you should see about getting it fixed.
