The French and Indian War was fought in the years 1754 to 1763. This war was fought by the United Kingdom and its colonies against the French and its Native American Allies. During this war, George Washington fought as a Colonel in the Virginia Regiment on the side of the United Kingdom.

It's really only in the US that this term is used. In the rest of the world, it's generally regarded as just that portion of the Seven Years' War that took place in North America.
(American) Indian tribes fought on both sides (even, in some cases, with different bands of the same tribe fighting on opposite sides). In general, the Iroquois Confederacy and a few other tribes (including, when they weren't fighting the British on their own behalf in the Anglo-Cherokee War, the Cherokee) supported the British, and most of the northern tribes other than the Six Tribes of the Iroquois supported the French, who were their primary trading partners.
I suppose that they were on the Indian side, since native Americans are Indians.

The French and Indian War is misleading because The French and the Indians were actually on the same side, fighting against the British. The British won however and gained the majority of North America as their land.
The French and Indian War began for various reasons. Primarily, France and England were fighting for land that Indians did not feel they were entitled to. Secondly, England was making guarantees to the Indians to fight on their side.
The French and Indian War was not between the French and the Indians. It was called the French and Indian War because the French and many Indians were allied together. This was the first major example of Europeans siding with Indians.
