channel 16

I am a former USCG Radioman. Make sure you are using a marine band radio otherwise the channels do not line up. The frequency you need is 156.800Mhz. Also the you use that for calling also. Then the USCG if it is not a distress call will switch you to a working frequency that is usually ch 22 or 157.100Mhz.

Also for hf the frequency is 2182Khz. Used to use 500Khz for Morse Code but it is not monitored anymore.

This was a real problem when I was stationed in Portland ME as they Canadian Fishing fleet used 22 as its working frequency so they were always stepping on us when we were working on 22.

Why you use API rather than System Calls?

System calls are much slower than APIs (library calls) since for each system call, a context switch has to occur to load the OS (which then serves the system call).

What is the difference between system call and library function call?

On one level, there is no difference. They are both function calls. The only difference is in what they do. System calls do something the user program cannot do; something having to do with system resources: memory, files, devices, network, terminals, processes etc. However, system calls are usually implemented by library function calls because, at the root of the matter, a C or C++ program can only invoke function calls to call upon the operating system to do things.

The Californian was in the water nearby but they'd shut their radios off and had stopped for the night because of the iceberg warnings. The Carpathia was further away but had their radios on and responded to Titanic's distress calls, arriving the morning after the sinking.
