The Dine' (Navajo) prior to the 1540s walked. There isn't any evidence of using dogs to haul things as some people did. After the mid 1500's they had horses. In the 19th century they increasingly used wagons, especially after returning from the Long Walk in 1868. After the early 1900s some people had cars but the roads were very bad in many places and horses were still needed. Most Dine' prefer pickup trucks today.

Because the Hopi were not a coastal people, they did not usually travel by river as some might believe. Before European colonists arrived, the Hopi simply walked. They also had dogs pulling a sort of dog sled called a "travois" as a way to carry heavy loads. Once colonists brought over horses, they were able to use those.
