Henry the Navigator initiated the Age of Discovery through his development of exploration and trade with Western Africa and Atlantic islands, as well as discovering new routes. He is the patron of Portuguese exploration. As the fifth son of King John I of Portugal, he used his position to direct and administrate the technology and resources for exploration of new lands. Through his work, the Portuguese discovered the Madeira Islands, the Azores, and various seas, as well as perfecting the North Atlantic "Volta do Mar" (return from the sea). It was at this time that the Portuguese came to understand sailing winds to return home. Because of his work, Bartolomeu Dias circumnavigated Africa in 1490 and Vasco de Gama reached the Indian ocean by sea in 1498.
