Yes, he served as a Private and rose to the rank of Lieutenant during the War of 1812. He was wounded three times at the Battle of Horshoe Bend. In 1818 while serving as a Tennessee criminal prosecutor he had a command in the State Militia.
That military service was certainly not enough to qualify him as the Commander of the Texas Army in the revolution, but he was made a Major General and managed to defeat and capture Santa Anna at the Battle of San Jacinto.
