The Company was supposed to get an easterly route, north of Siberia, to the Indies. Instead, Hudson turned west when he found the easterly route blocked by icefields above Norway, and tried to find a westerly route above today's Canada and Alaska. That route proved blocked by icefields as well, and Hudson went on to the bay that today carries his name, because Indian tribes had told him that the Pacific started behind the bay. Only, it turned out that they mistook the Great Lakes for the ocean.
Instead of the north-eastern route they had hoped for, the Dutch East India Company got a nice shipful of American furs out of the expedition. And this formed the start of much Dutch fur trading activity and settlement in the region that later became the early American colonies.
