Calicut, May, 20th, 1498
It was the Portuguese who made the first naval expedition to India, in 1498. They arrived in Calicut (not today's Calcutta, but a coastal town in India now called Kozhikode) only to find a small but thriving European business community already established there. At least a number of them would have reached India partly over sea. But we usually count Vasco da Gama's 1498 voyage as the first 'official' sea travel to India.
Vasco de Gama
=== === Vasco da Gama was the first European explorer to sail directly from Portugal to India reaching Calicut (modern day Kozhikode) on May 20, 1498. Ferdinand Magellan was the European explorer who led the first successful circumnavigation, or to travel completely around, of the earth. Although he was killed in the Philippines during the Battle of Mactan, his fleet continued the journey back to Spain and returned in 1525.
Fernao Gomes was the first major Portuguese explorer to enter Africa in 1471 around what is now Ghana. He was followed shortly by Fernao do Po and Diego Cao who both explored further east into Cameroon. Within 20 years Bartolomeo Dias and Vasco Da Gama explored further south and around the cape of Good Hope.
