The largest of the Congreve rockets had a 15 foot stick to aid directional stability, weighed 32lbs and was effectively used during the Napoleonic wars. However, details are not known ,but the first rockets became available with the invention of gunpowder in the 9th Cenury and this led to experiments with 'fire arrows' as well as bombs and other devices. The first recorded use was in the early 1200's by the Chinese against the Monguls. The monguls took the invention from the Chinese after conquest and the idea slowly moved towards Europe. They were used at Constantinople in 1453. In 1792 iron cased rockets were used in India. The British took an interest and developed the process in the 19th Century. German scientists developed the units doring the second world war, they had a range of 185 miles and carried a warhead of 1000kgs. And now to the moon and beyond. Saturn V is 365 feet long and weighs 6,200,000lbs and cost $15,000,000.
