Sweeney Todd is based on a man Jarman, and his wife, who, at one time, were the landlords of the Ostrich Inn in South East English. He would get his rich male patrons drunk and lead them into what is called the Blue Room in the Inn. In that room was a bed that was rigged with a trap door. After the rich man fell asleep, Jarman would activate the trap door and the rich man would fall to the floor below into a vat boiling oil. He went to convicted of murdering 15 men but admitted to killing as many as 60.
