After a thirty year struggle, India and Pakistan gained independence in 1947. This was the start of a mass migration of over ten million people with as many as one million dying from the riots that ensued. Although it was generally believed to have been a division of groups based on faith, many Muslims remained in India. Some historians speculate the real reason the partition occurred so abruptly was due to the British no longer able to afford the colony after World War II.
