In the early sixties, Kennedy believed in " brinksmanship", keeping us on the brink of nuclear war with Russia, with crises in Berlin and Cuba. After Kennedy died, we got into war in Viet-Nam and thousands of draftees were needed. The war was never declared and many draft-age students questioned its merits. So, there were protests against the draft and protests against companies which made war materials and protests against college administrators who allowed such companies to recruit on campus. There were also young people who mostly wanted to get high but wanted a cause and a reason. Eventually some students and others were shot at Kent State in Ohio by the national guard, causing a big uproar.
