They were looking for a water pathway to Asia. and they encountered this new world and called it new France. The king sent over women to start making a colony and they sent over raw materials to England which got made into good and sent back to new France to sell.

It was settled because in the early 1600's the French claimed this area. Since it was cold not many settlers lived here accept the men and boys that were trading furs at fur trading posts like Quebec. Missionaries were also throughout New France
