Wellington is the capital city of New Zealand. New Zealand's first capital city was Old Russell (Okiato) in 1840-1841. Auckland was the second capital 1841-1865. Wellington became the capital in 1865.
The capital of NZ was never at Kororareka. When Governor Hobson was looking for a site for a temporary capital of NZ in 1840 he chose Okiato in the Bay of Islands. He renamed Okiato to become "Russell" in honour of Lord John Russell, Britain's Colonial Secretary at the time. When Hobson went to Auckland in 1841 the capital went with him. In January 1844 Russell's boundaries were extended to include Kororareka and his Excellency the Governor directed that Kororareka be henceforth be known as Russell. Okiato got their old name back and Kororareka became Russell.
Yes and no, depending on how you look at it. The current capital city of New Zealand is Wellington. Whilst Auckland is a larger city, and was once the capital, there were reasons for New Zealand's capital to be where it is. For example, Wellington is located approximately in the geographic centre of the country and is closer to the Cook Strait, and therefore the South Island. This is a way of demonstrating that both islands are one country, and that it is a better location for trade. A similar scenario is evident in Australia and the US, in which the largest city (Sydney and New York) is not the capital city (Canberra and Washington DC).
On the other hand, Wellington is certainly not perfect. It is well-known for its earthquakes, most prominently in the mid-1900s. This was a devastation to the city, as Wellington was made the capital in this time period. Auckland has been much more fortunate in the way of natural disasters. 30% of the country's population is in Auckland, compared to 10% in Wellington. Of course, with population comes wealth. With population comes supporters. With population comes more goods and services.
Then again, the answer would be likely to vary depending on the city of origin of the answerer. As an Australian, I see little reason to change the capital.

Soon after this, the settlement at Okiato was burned to the ground.
