Ponyboy and Johnny left the church with Dallas to go eat at the Dairy Queen, But Johnny left a lit cigarette inside.

Actually only Ponyboy went to the court in chapter 4 because Johnny was currently at the hospital trying to heal his wound from the church fire.....but, it ended as Johnny not able to go in court at all because of his tragic death. At least, he doesn't have to worry about the consequences and responsibilities he has to face for killing Bob.

How does johnny die in the hospital in the outsiders movie?
Johnny gets hurt in the outsiders by coming back to the church after going out to Dairy Queen. The church has caught on fire by accident, and some of the children from the picnic was in there, so with out thinking twice, Johnny and Ponyboy went in to get the kids. The kids were yeeted(thrown) out the window. Then, the roof started caving in, so Johnny pushed Ponyboy out and he was too late, and got hit by a flaming log thing.
Why do johnny and Ponyboy need to appear in court?
Johnny told ponyboy that they needed to go back when they were in Windrixville because he wanted Ponyboy to stay away from the trouble and because it was Johnny's problem and not his. Johnny and Ponyboy also decided to face the police because they were tired and they can't stay hidden forever in the old church.
