When will India become a superpower?

India already holds some of the requisite characteristics of a "superpower". India has 1/5 of the world's total population and is ranked 4th in terms of Gross Domestic Product (GDP). It also possesses nuclear weapons. The Indian Navy is the strongest in its region, and may be able to project seapower globally within a decade or two.

However, due to the competing interests of China in Asia, and the demands that its large population places on its infrastructure, India is unlikely to soon overtake the 100-year lead in industrialization that the Western nations have. The per-capita GDP of India is low, ranked 128th among the world's nations, and pressures will increase to provide domestic consumer services and goods.

Although the US, Europe and Japan suffered from the Recession from 2008-2010, the dependence on foreign oil places India in similar circumstances.

If the word superpower means the enthusiasm to instruct other countries how to rule themselves like the one practised by America with the help of money, arms and diplomacy, then India would never become or be willing to be a superpower.

If the word superpower means the wealth of spiritual knowledge, depth of harmony, intention in reasonable preservation of freedom, self-respect, great diversified living conditions, fiscal/financial/economic practices, inclination towards justice and recognition for great family environments, to say a few, - India has always been a superpower.

If the word superpower means the enthusiasm to support constant scientific, engineering and technological improvements in-spite of probable failures, India has a long way to go.
