Gandhi was one of the leaders of an independence movement which aimed to free what was then India from British rule. He was not the only leader and the first prime minister of India was Pandit Nehru.

The country which was ruled by the British contained more than just modern India, as it included modern Pakistan and modern Bangladesh as well. Before independence there were many disagreements as to what form the new state should take, but one of the leaders of the independence movement, Mohamed Ali Jinnah insisted that there should be a separate state for Muslims and a state in two halves was formed - West Pakistan and East Pakistan. The process of creating two states was called "partition" and the mass movement of people Muslims involved was accompanied by large-scale rioting and religious hatred.
