The biggest reason countries colonized Africa was primarily driven by the pursuit of economic interests, particularly the desire for natural resources, raw materials, and new markets for their goods. Additionally, the spread of European political power and influence, along with the belief in the superiority of Western civilization, motivated many nations to expand their territories in Africa during the late 19th and early 20th centuries. This led to the exploitation of African resources and peoples, often disregarding local cultures and governance.

Primarily it was to obtain the raw materials that existed there. At the time, much of Africa was an unexplored land with untapped resources. Since Africa was technologically inferior to Europe at the time, and the populations there mainly primitive, establishing colonies was not prohibitively difficult. The Berlin Conference of 1884-1885 essentially "divided up" Africa into various European colonies and spheres of influence, many of which lasted until the middle of the 20th century.
Liberia was the only country in West Africa to not be colonized by a European Power as it already had a "legitimate" Western-style government.
As it is known today, Liberia was not colonized by any European power; it was colonized by the United States of America.
