The book opened with Dorothy and Uncle Henry as passengers on a ship headed across the Pacific Ocean, to Australia. Dorothy was out on the deck in the midst of a storm. She sought refuge in a chicken coop, which was washed overboard and landed on shore in the land of Ev. Dorothy and Billina the hen started off to get help. When Dorothy got hungry, she fed herself from lunch box trees and then from dinner pail trees.
