Although Europeans (Portuguese, French, English and Dutch) were visiting the Cape of Good Hope since 1488, it was the English who first tried to establish a colonial settlement in 1614. (There is a strong argument and evidence that the Chinese Fleet of Admiral Zeng He rounded the Cape in 1421)

The first settler group were convicts from Newgate Prison, under the command of Captain Crosse and sponsored by the English East India Company. The whole process began in 1613 with the kidnapping of a Khoe Chief Xhore who hasd been taken to England, taught English and was then returned to the Cape. Xhore was supposed to act as an interpretor-facilitator of the Newgate Settlers, but ended up opposing the settlement. The settlers escaped on a longboat to Robben Island. Within the next three years the entire attempted settlement was abandoned.

Even although the English had formally annexed the Cape of Good Hope, the Dutch East India Company (VOC) established a fort at the Cape in 1652 under Commander Jan van Riebeeck and this became the foundation for the long term colonial settlement. Most of the actual personnel of the VOC were Germans, Swiss, Scandanavians, Ambonese soldiers while the leading official were Dutch. Along with the Europeans over the next five years, hundreds of mainly Indian, African and Malagsy slaves were also brought in, followed by Indonesian slaves later. For most of the 1700s there more more slaves than Europeans at the settlement. Intermarriage between Europeans and freed slaves was pretty commonplace.
