The Iroquois are matriarchal. The elder women are the head of the family. Homes belong to the women of the tribe as do the children. When a man marries, he joins the wife's family. When a woman divorced, the children remained with the mother.
That would be the eldest WOMAN, but the Iroquois is broken up into clans. So the woman of the clans would be in charge. She would pick another MAN and he would lead and protect. The woman is really the main person.
Female Elders.

Women had many important jobs in the Iroquois tribe such as planting and harvesting the crops, collecting wild nuts and berries, making clothes, clay pots and baskets, taking care of the homes and the children. And of one of the most important jobs was being a Clan Mother.
The Iroquois Confederacy first began when five different Native American nations, the Cayuga, the Onondaga, the Mohawk, the Seneca, and the Oneida came together against their common enemies, to strengthen their tribes. Each tribe had its representative. If a tribe had a conflict, the Iroquois Confederacy representatives came together and discussed it until they could reach a compromise. Usually these compromises worked. The Iroquois Confederacy was a form of government among the more Southern Eastern Woodlands Tribes.

The Iroquois lived in wooden homes called longhouses. They used log canoes for traveling up and down rivers, and were handy at making tools, weapons, and things like snowshoes. They made clothing from furs and woven plant fibers, and used handmade beads to make jewelry and decorate their clothing.
The men
The Iroquois used consensus making by tribal accord. The head chief would control the majority and he would be in charge of taking a vote. This was done even though the head chief had the power to do whatever he wanted.
One Iroquois clan typically has one chief. The chief is selected based on their leadership qualities and is responsible for making decisions and representing the clan in matters of governance and diplomacy.
