There was no actual president of India in July 1969. The president had died in May and a new one was elected in August. In the interim period there were two Acting Presidents. Varahagiri Venkata Giri had been vice-President and was Acting President until the 20th of July. Mohammad Hidayatullah then took over during the election campaign. Varahagiri Venkata Giri was elected President and took office in August 1969.
