On August 20, 1938, Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer assigned Richard Thorpe [February 24, 1896-May 1, 1991], to direct The Wizard of Oz. Thorpe began directing the film on October 12. But ten days later, he was replaced by George Dewey Cukor [July 7, 1899-January 24, 1983], as interim director. On November 3, Victor Fleming [February 23, 1889-January 6, 1949] took over, and remained as director except for the last three weeks of filming. In February 1939, King Wallis Vidor [February 8, 1894-November 1, 1982] took over the filming, which was completed March 16, 1939.
