India aimed at self sufficiency in food grains since independence. To achieve this the Indian policy makers adopted the following measures.

  • India adopted a new strategy in agriculture, which resulted in the ' G r e e n Revolution' especially in the production of wheat and rice.
  • Indira Gandhi, the then Prime Minister of India, officially recorded the impressive strides of the Green revolution in agriculture by releasing a special stamp entitled 'Wheat Revolution' in July 1968.

The impact of the measures were such that :

  • The success of wheat was later replicated in rice.
  • The highest rate of growth was achieved in Punjab and Haryana, where foodgrain production jumped from 7.23 million tonnes in 1964-65 to reach an all-time high of 30.33 million tonnes in 1995-96.
