Photography was invented in the mid-1800's. They didn't have the technology that we have today. Some pictures took ten minutes of the object or person being photographed to stay still to come out right. Also, cameras did not have flash or any fancy gadgets like we have on cameras today. The photographer would not know if the picture came out right until they sat in a darkroom and developed each picture, one by one.

Matthew Brady is known for the pictures he too during the Civil War. He was known as the "Father of Photojournalism" and was considered to be one of the greatest photographers during the Civil War. He took the famous pictures of Abraham Lincoln, the Battle of Antietam, and many other battles and important people. It's even said that he took the picture of Lincoln that is used today on the five dollar bill and the penny.

For some "good" pictures from the 1840's to the 1860's, look up Matthew Brady. You may find some that are familiar.

What did British soldiers look like during the 1800s?

Well, Norway only participated in one war during this period, a brief one with Sweden in the early 1800s. we only had 30 000 men, so the war was not high profiled, and the first pictures of uniforms are form the 1860s. They were simple, and buttoned up. Some pictures can be found at: http://www.arkivverket.no/webfelles/arkivmagasinet/arkivmag_02_06.pdf Most of the pictures are not of norwegian uniforms from the 1800s, but on page 3 (content) you can see the uniform from the 1860s in the corner. colour isn't mentioned(and the pictures black and white), but they are black, blue or darker green i would assume.
